Experienced Counsellor

As a qualified and experienced Auckland-based counsellor I believe I have the knowledge, understanding and skills to guide you on the path to harmony within yourself and in your relationship with your partner. Before training as a counsellor I worked as a pastor for 28 years. This has been a good grounding and has helped me to develop a feel for the everyday challenges and struggles people deal with and go through in life. Having worked closely with people over so many years, I increasingly realised that the need to be able to offer professional counselling was becoming more and more of a necessity. Relationships lie close to my heart and the emotional and relational well-being of people is of utmost importance to me.

I will work collaboratively with you to gain awareness of the goals and outcomes you wish to achieve. As you are on your own, unique life journey, it is important for you to be enabled to progressively move forward to reach the outcomes you wish to achieve. Throughout life people are continuously dealing with various, often stressful, experiences. Some experiences profoundly impact our lives. Just to mention a few: dealing with various kinds of loss and subsequent grief, trauma, strained relationships with a partner/husband/children/ parents or colleagues. It could even be as simple as dealing with the stress of everyday life. Having experienced the process of immigration first hand, I also understand the stress related issues involved with taking such a big step.

New Zealand has been my home since 2006 when I moved to from the beautiful Garden Route in South Africa (George) to Auckland. Throughout my years as a pastor I have consistently worked on my professional and personal development and am thankful to have reached this point where I am able to channel my passion into part-time private practice at Care Counselling.

  • Diploma in Counselling, New Zealand Institute of Professional Counselling (NZIPC)
  • Provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) > Certificate in Trauma, Pastoral Care and Counselling
  • B.th Degree
  • Masters Degree in Theology

My AREAS OF SPECIALTY

Anxiety

Counselling and therapy can be useful to someone experiencing anxiety. Through support and guidance the root of the anxiety can be identified. Once the individual learns to understand his/her fears causing the anxiety there are techniques that can teach your body and mind to be calm and present.

Depression

Depression can be described as a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person‘s thoughts, behavior, feelings and physical well-being. Individuals may lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable; experience loss of appetite or overeat, have problems concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions; and may contemplate or even attempt suicide.

Family Counselling

The relationship involved may be between members of a family, individuals in a relationship, employee and employer in a workplace, or between a professional and a client. Most relationships can take strain at times. If individuals involved do not have the mechanisms to effectively deal with this strain, tension can escalate and result in producing self-reinforced, mal-adapted patterns of behaviour.

Grief Counselling

Grief can be experienced through any change in life, even if it’s one we have consciously chosen to make. Well known examples of grief include the loss of a loved one through death, loss of a significant relationship, loss of a home (or significant damage), being made redundant or being injured in an accident, retirement or a decline in health.

Immigration

It is a very tough step for everyone to immigrate to a new and foreign country. It is also common to experience some anxiety and stress when going through the difficult process of adjusting to a new country and lifestyle.

Marriage Counselling

It is important to recognize and acknowledge that each person has a unique personality, perception, set of values and history. Married couples and those in long-term relationships can learn to accept and appreciate their differences, effectively communicate their feelings and needs, and adjust their beliefs and habits.

Relationships

Relationship Counselling is the process of counselling the parties of a relationship in an effort to recognize and to better manage or reconcile troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress.

Trauma

Each individual will be affected differently by a traumatic event. Each individual will also processes the trauma differently. Traumatic experiences make us question our beliefs about safety and can destroy our assumptions of trust. A traumatic event involves a single experience.
